Thanks for all the postings over the past month, mikeyboy, they have been funny and informative and enriched my world cup experience in a way that Terry Butcher somehow never managed to do.
As for the final, the result was an utter disaster for the game. The team trying to win lost and the team staffed with players grown in a league wh more…

Yes, I look forward to our similar pint, mike. In a sadistic kind of a way. Yes. Oh, shit. Carragher - he was brought on not to win it, but to lose it. Don't you see? Did we even have a fifth taker lined up? No. You can trace the line from Pearce to Southgate to Batty to Vassell and to Carragher. The lineage is purest tryer: honest, hard-working, w more…

Yeah, I am with Italy. Marginally. But what I would love even more is just a bloody great game, both teams attacking, etc. Interesting points about Camoranesi and Perotta, Mike - and I do remember the latter was clean through against Germany in the inside left channel, only for a distinctly English touch to enable an easy save from Lehmann. But Cam more…

Two PA s at work this morning discussing the football. Neither of them likes Zidane because he looks weird and want Italy to win because Totti is well fit.
I prefered him with long hair to be honest.

Saha's two cameos have resulted in two quick bookings and a suspension for the final - while I feel for the guy, I also find it quite amusing - it's more like Sahahahaha....
I had a horribly vivid dream about England last night, playing in the semi-final of the World Cup. It wasn't too realstic, not only because (obviously) we're not t more…

the point I noticed was when the Italian guy fell over in the box and put his hand up... he was actually pointing to the corner flag for a corner and not for a pen....
that game last night was how football is supposed to be played, open, fair and really good both in the air and on the ground... Italy deserved to win, they not only had more…

I am glad I didnt see mikeyboy's face as it would have broke me even more. Talking to him on the phone was bad enough. But, yes... it's hollow. Hollow Man. Rooney was hard done by; the ref knew his rep and went on that I reckon. Yeah. Anyway, that's about all I'm going to say, apart from this - Zidane was actually pretty good for once against Brazi more…

We're not the best fans in the world. But at least we're a bit more self-aware than Italian fans - Totti as the best player in the World Cup? He hasn't even been the best player in the Italian midfield. In fact, he's looked distinctly mediocre. So there. I'm hurt, and I'm lashing out, but: so there. more…

I got them last week, its amazing. I can see everything. I think you had a pair like them once. I'll send you a picture later.
I don't think there will be a backlash, the blame will be laid at Johnny Foreigner's door and we shall throw our support behind the new breed.

Hello Hawys. I think we might have met once. If you thought mikeyboy's face was bad, you should have seen robmartinique's nephew.

I empathize with you Rob. Seeing Mike's face on Saturday was enough to even make me feel it. Being Welsh, I am quite used to watching my team lose which makes winning even better and makes us a stronger nation. You could learn a lot from us. Never expect to much. But remember we did win the ashes.
See this weekend

I think I remember Mellor's 606 from my stint of near-obsessive 5 Live listening back as a pre-teen (it followed my family's wholly pointless six month flirtation with Sky TV - got me freakin' addicted to football coverage so I began mainlining the radio).

Yes, mikeyboy (sorry to be repetitive) - drop Lampard and let a team of state-educated men show that posh show pony what a team sport is all about.
The reason it never works with both Gerrard and Lampard in the team is that Lampard does not work. Why should he run back to defend when that Scouse oik can do it all for him, leaving him t more…

Good post, a great read. I too await the game with a mixture of excitement, anticipation and dread. I'll be supporting the Figo and his troops and hopefully they'll overcome the complacent, over cautious and over rated England team. It'll be close but I just feel that the Portuguese will shade it, England haven’t choked yet and we all know that's a more…

Vieira was not immense. Not even in the Brazilian striker sense of the word. He was just marginally less crap than the entire Spain team - who played, let's face it, like Arsenal on one of their classic away day nightmares. Which I'm sure Clive Tyldesley would find ironic somehow. Yeah, Spain. Even needing to get a goal with a mere five minutes of more…

I concur, Vieira, with your Henry point. It was a foul, but he did try to get that very plain-looking defender sent off.
I found the entire game dispiriting. Everyone over-reacts to tackles, everyone stays down when tackled in the expectation that the ball will be kicked out and the ball kicked back to them, erveryone fakes a busted no more…

I didn't watch the football yesterday and I have very little to say about it.

You can probably guess from my handle that I'm going to be slightly biased:)
But whenever I saw Arsenal play Liverpool from about 2001 onwards, Gerrard was completely anonymous and the only noticeable player in the entire midfield was Vieira. I'm not sure that's all going to change overnight. more…

Oh dear, I'm being pernickety again. His name was spelt wrong on a new shirt advertisement from Arsenal once! Hilarious!
What got me, although it annoyed me to see Henry pretending he was hit in the face, was commentators and the Spanish pretending it wasn't a foul. Henry wasn't hit in the face, but he was more…
